# Chrome: No internet — There is something wrong with the proxy server. ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED

**Code:** `ERR_TUNNEL_CONNECTION_FAILED` · **Category:** Browser · **Seen on:** Chrome, Edge, Windows, macOS

Chrome asked a proxy to open a tunnel (HTTPS CONNECT) to the website and the proxy refused or could not reach it.

## Meaning

This happens in corporate networks, on school/hotel Wi-Fi, and with misconfigured proxy or VPN software. The proxy may require authentication, may block the destination, or may be down. Check the system proxy settings first.

## Common causes

- Proxy server down, wrong address or port
- Proxy requires credentials or blocks the site (filtering)
- System proxy auto-configuration (PAC) script failing
- VPN or security tool inserting a broken proxy
- Corporate network allowing only some destinations

## Quick fix

1. Check the proxy settings and turn them off if you do not need a proxy
2. Ask your network admin whether the site is allowed through the proxy
3. Try another network or mobile hotspot

## Detailed fix by platform

### Windows

1. Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy: turn off "Use a proxy server" and "Automatically detect settings" to test
2. `netsh winhttp show proxy` and `netsh winhttp reset proxy`

### macOS

1. System Settings → Network → your connection → Details → Proxies: untick every protocol that is not required

### Chrome

1. Settings → System → Open your computer's proxy settings

## How to diagnose

1. **Proxy** — Is a proxy configured at all?
2. **Network** — Does it work on a mobile hotspot?
3. **Policy** — Is the site on a block list?
