# Console: NotFoundError: Requested device not found (getUserMedia has no camera or microphone)

**Code:** `NotFoundError: Requested device not found` · **Category:** Browser · **Seen on:** Chrome, Firefox, Safari, JavaScript

`getUserMedia` found no camera or microphone matching the constraints — the device is missing, disabled or the constraints are too strict.

## Meaning

The browser enumerated no suitable input device. Common on desktops without a webcam, virtual machines, remote sessions, or when exact `deviceId`/resolution constraints cannot be satisfied (that case is usually `OverconstrainedError`). Check `enumerateDevices()` first.

## Common causes

- No camera or microphone connected, or disabled in Device Manager / BIOS
- Remote desktop, VM or container with no device passthrough
- Requesting video when only audio exists (or the reverse)
- Stale saved `deviceId` of a removed device
- Privacy shutter or hardware switch

## Quick fix

1. Plug in or enable the device and reload
2. Request only the media you need: `{ audio: true }` or `{ video: true }`
3. Call `enumerateDevices()` to see what the browser can use

## Detailed fix by platform

### JavaScript

1. `const devices = await navigator.mediaDevices.enumerateDevices(); console.table(devices.map(d => [d.kind, d.label]));`

### Windows

1. Device Manager → Cameras / Audio inputs → enable the device; Settings → Privacy → Camera

## How to diagnose

1. **Devices** — Does enumerateDevices list any input?
2. **Environment** — VM, RDP or physical machine?
3. **Constraints** — Too strict?
