# Networking: ping — Destination Host Unreachable / Destination net unreachable (ICMP type 3)

**Code:** `Reply from 192.168.1.1: Destination host unreachable` · **Category:** Networking · **Seen on:** Windows, Linux, Networking

A router (or your own PC) tells you it has no way to deliver the packet to that address.

## Meaning

If the reply comes from your own IP, ARP failed on the local network. If it comes from a router, the route to the destination is missing or the next hop is down. Check the gateway, routing table and the target's subnet.

## Common causes

- Target host off or on another subnet
- Wrong default gateway
- Missing route on a router
- ARP failed on the local segment
- Firewall rejecting with ICMP unreachable

## Quick fix

1. Check `ip route` / `route print` for the destination
2. Ping the default gateway first
3. Run `traceroute` to find where it stops

## Detailed fix by platform

### Windows

1.

```powershell
ping 192.168.1.1
route print
tracert 10.0.0.5
```

## How to diagnose

1. **Reply from** — Your IP or a router?
2. **Gateway** — Reachable?
3. **Route** — Present?
