TypeError: Cannot set properties of undefined (setting 'x')
Code assigned a property on a value that is undefined (or null).
Seen on:
JavaScript
Meaning
The object you are writing into doesn’t exist yet — a nested object that was never created, an array slot that is empty, or a DOM element that wasn’t found.
Common causes
- Nested object not initialised (obj.a.b = 1 when obj.a is undefined)
- Array index that doesn’t exist yet
- State/props not loaded
- Element lookup returned null
⚡ Quick fix
- Create the parent first: obj.a ??= {}
- Use spread to build new objects
- Check the element exists before writing to it
Detailed fix by platform
JavaScript
- javascript
settings.theme ??= {}; settings.theme.color = 'dark';
How to diagnose
- Object — What is undefined on the left of the dot?
- Creation — Where should it be initialised?
