Disk quota exceeded 🐧 Linux

Disk quota exceeded (EDQUOT)

Your user or group has used its storage quota on this filesystem, even if the disk itself has space.

Seen on: Linux

Meaning

Shared hosting, university/HPC clusters and NFS home directories enforce per-user quotas (blocks and/or file counts). Caches, logs or build artifacts in the home directory usually fill it.

Common causes

  • User block quota reached
  • File-count (inode) quota reached
  • Caches (pip, npm, conda) in the home directory
  • Trash or old build outputs

⚡ Quick fix

  1. Check usage: quota -s (or the provider’s tool)
  2. Clean caches and big directories
  3. Move work to a scratch/project area or ask for more quota

Detailed fix by platform

Linux

  1. bash
    quota -s
    du -sh ~/.cache ~/.npm ~/.conda 2>/dev/null
pip cache purge; npm cache clean --force

How to diagnose

  1. Quota — Blocks vs files limit
  2. Usage — du -sh ~/* | sort -h
