MySQL ERROR 1227 (42000): Access denied; you need (at least one of) the SUPER privilege(s) for this operation
The import or statement needs SUPER/SYSTEM_VARIABLES_ADMIN — typical with dumps containing DEFINER clauses or SET GLOBAL on managed databases.
Seen on:
MySQL
Meaning
Managed services (RDS, Cloud SQL, shared hosting) don’t grant SUPER. Dumps with DEFINER=root@localhost, SET @@GLOBAL.GTID_PURGED or log_bin_trust_function_creators fail.
Common causes
- DEFINER clauses in views/triggers/routines
- SET @@SESSION.SQL_LOG_BIN / GTID_PURGED lines
- Creating functions with binary logging enabled
⚡ Quick fix
- Strip DEFINER clauses: sed -E 's/DEFINER=
[^]+@[^]+//g' - Dump with --set-gtid-purged=OFF
- Set log_bin_trust_function_creators in the provider’s parameter group
Detailed fix by platform
Linux
mysqldump --set-gtid-purged=OFF --skip-definer appdb > dump.sql # skip-definer: MySQL Shell / newer tools
How to diagnose
- Line — Which statement fails?
- Host — Managed service?
