ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
Oracle can’t see the table — it doesn’t exist, is in another schema, or you lack privileges on it.
Seen on:
SQL
Meaning
Oracle reports missing privileges the same way as missing objects. Tables in other schemas need SCHEMA.TABLE or a synonym, and quoted mixed-case names must keep their quotes.
Common causes
- Object in another schema without prefix/synonym
- No SELECT grant
- Quoted mixed-case name ("Orders")
- Not created yet
⚡ Quick fix
- Prefix the schema: APP.ORDERS
- Grant privileges: GRANT SELECT ON app.orders TO reporting
- Avoid quoted identifiers
Detailed fix by platform
SQL
SELECT owner, table_name FROM all_tables WHERE table_name = 'ORDERS';
How to diagnose
- Owner — Which schema owns it?
- Grant — Privileges?
