ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor

The listener is up but doesn’t know the service name you requested.

Seen on: SQL

Meaning

Wrong service name (SID vs SERVICE_NAME, CDB vs PDB), the database not registered with the listener yet, or the PDB not open.

Common causes

  • Wrong service name
  • Database/PDB not started or not registered
  • Using SID where service name is required

⚡ Quick fix

  1. lsnrctl services to list known services
  2. Open the PDB: ALTER PLUGGABLE DATABASE x OPEN
  3. Use the exact service name
