VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found / MSVCP140.dll is missing
The program needs the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable, which isn’t installed (or is damaged).
Seen on:
Windows
Meaning
Apps built with Visual Studio link to the shared Visual C++ runtime. If the matching redistributable (x86 for 32-bit apps, x64 for 64-bit apps) is missing, Windows can’t load them. Downloading single DLLs from random sites is unsafe — install the official package.
Common causes
- Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable not installed
- Only the x64 version installed for a 32-bit app (or vice versa)
- Runtime damaged by an uninstall
- Python/PHP/Node native modules on a fresh Windows machine
⚡ Quick fix
- Install the latest “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable” x64 and x86 from Microsoft
- Repair it via Apps & features if already installed
- Never download standalone DLLs from third-party sites
Detailed fix by platform
Windows
- Install both runtimes with winget:powershell
winget install Microsoft.VCRedist.2015+.x64 winget install Microsoft.VCRedist.2015+.x86
How to diagnose
- DLL — Which DLL is named?
- Architecture — Is the app 32- or 64-bit?
- Installed — Which VC++ redistributables are listed in Apps?
