Google Maps: This API project is not authorized to use this API / RefererNotAllowedMapError / ApiNotActivatedMapError
The Maps API key isn’t allowed for this site/API — the API isn’t enabled, the referrer restriction doesn’t include your domain, or billing is off.
Seen on:
REST API
Meaning
Each Maps API (Maps JavaScript, Places, Geocoding) must be enabled in the key’s project, billing must be active, and HTTP referrer restrictions must match the page URL (with wildcards).
Common causes
- Specific API not enabled (ApiNotActivatedMapError)
- Referrer restriction doesn’t match the domain (RefererNotAllowedMapError)
- Billing not enabled
- API restrictions on the key exclude the API
⚡ Quick fix
- Enable the needed API in Google Cloud
- Add https://example.com/* (and subdomains) to referrers
- Enable billing; check key’s API restrictions
Detailed fix by platform
Google Cloud
- bash
# APIs & Services → Library → enable "Maps JavaScript API", "Places API" # Credentials → API key → Website restrictions: https://*.example.com/*
How to diagnose
- Console — Exact error name in browser console
- APIs — Enabled list
- Restrictions — Referrers and APIs
