SwiftUI Preview: Cannot preview in this file — the preview crashed / failed to build
Xcode Previews couldn’t build or run the view — compile errors elsewhere, a crash in preview data, or preview-specific environment missing.
Seen on:
iOS
Meaning
Previews build the whole target. A build error in another file, missing environment objects (@EnvironmentObject), network/database calls in init, or architecture issues (Rosetta) crash them. The Diagnostics button shows details.
Common causes
- Compile error elsewhere in the target
- Missing .environmentObject / environment values in the preview
- Code that crashes without real data (force unwraps, network)
- Derived data/preview cache corruption
⚡ Quick fix
- Click Diagnostics for the real error
- Provide mock data and environment objects in #Preview
- Delete derived data / xcrun simctl --set previews delete all
Detailed fix by platform
Swift
- swift
#Preview { ProfileView() .environmentObject(Session.preview) }
Shell
- swift
rm -rf ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData xcrun simctl --set previews delete all
