Networking: %CDP-4-NATIVE_VLAN_MISMATCH / device on the wrong VLAN can't reach the gateway
A port or trunk carries a different VLAN than expected, so hosts silently land on the wrong network.
Native VLAN mismatch%CDP-4-NATIVE_VLAN_MISMATCH: Native VLAN mismatch discoveredVLAN mismatchWrong VLAN no network access Meaning
Compare the access VLAN on the port (show vlan brief, show interfaces trunk) with the VLAN of the gateway and DHCP scope. On trunks, both ends need the same native VLAN and the VLAN allowed on the trunk; otherwise frames are dropped or leak between networks.
Common causes
- Access port assigned to the wrong VLAN
- Native VLAN differs at each end of a trunk
- VLAN not allowed on the trunk
- VLAN missing from the switch database
- Voice/data VLAN misconfigured
⚡ Quick fix
- Check the port:
show interfaces Gi0/5 switchport - Match native VLAN and allowed list on both trunk ends
- Create the VLAN on every switch in the path
Detailed fix by platform
Cisco
- text
show vlan brief show interfaces trunk show interfaces Gi0/5 switchport | include VLAN
How to diagnose
- Port VLAN — Expected?
- Trunk native VLAN — Same at both ends?
- VLAN — Allowed on trunk?

Many errors look alike. If the steps above didn’t solve it, one of these is probably what you’re facing:
Similar errors
- arp -a shows (incomplete) Networking: `arp -n` shows (incomplete) / Destination Host Unreachable — no ARP reply from the next hop
- Cannot assign requested address (EADDRNOTAVAIL) Networking: connect: Cannot assign requested address — ephemeral port range exhausted by TIME_WAIT connections
- DHCPDISCOVER ... No DHCPOFFERS received Networking: dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 ... No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
Most viewed in Networking
- Rogue DHCP server hands out wrong gateway/DNS Networking: Clients receive the wrong default gateway or DNS server — a rogue DHCP server (often a home router) answers first
- Idle connections silently dropped by firewall/NAT Networking: Connection works, then fails after being idle — firewall/NAT idle timeout dropped the TCP session (use keepalive)
- DHCPDISCOVER: no free leases Networking: dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff via eth0: network 192.168.1.0/24: no free leases
