MongooseError: Operation `users.find()` buffering timed out after 10000ms
Mongoose queued a query waiting for a connection that never opened.
Seen on:
Node.js
Meaning
Mongoose buffers commands until connect() succeeds. If the connection fails (wrong URI, IP not whitelisted on Atlas, no await), queries time out after 10s.
Common causes
- mongoose.connect not called or not awaited
- Atlas IP access list missing your server
- Wrong connection string / credentials
- Multiple mongoose instances (connection on one, models on another)
⚡ Quick fix
- await mongoose.connect(uri) before starting the server
- Add the server IP in Atlas Network Access
- Log connection errors (mongoose.connection.on('error'))
Detailed fix by platform
Node.js
- javascript
await mongoose.connect(process.env.MONGODB_URI); app.listen(3000);
How to diagnose
- Connect — Awaited and succeeding?
- Network — Atlas access list?
