SQL Server: Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
The command ran longer than the client’s CommandTimeout (default 30 seconds).
Seen on:
SQL
Meaning
Slow queries, blocking/locks, or parameter-sniffed bad plans. The timeout is client-side; the query may still be running on the server.
Common causes
- Missing indexes / large scans
- Blocking by another session
- Bad cached plan (parameter sniffing)
- Default 30s command timeout
⚡ Quick fix
- Find blocking with sp_who2 / sys.dm_exec_requests
- Tune the query and indexes
- Raise CommandTimeout for long jobs
Detailed fix by platform
SQL
SELECT session_id, blocking_session_id, wait_type, command FROM sys.dm_exec_requests WHERE blocking_session_id <> 0;
How to diagnose
- Blocking — Any blockers?
- Plan — Execution plan reasonable?
