Meaning
Many hosts block PHP mail() or mark it as spam. Contact Form 7 shows this when wp_mail returns false. Use an SMTP plugin with authenticated SMTP and a From address on your domain.
Common causes
- Server mail() disabled or not configured
- From address not on your domain (rejected/SPF)
- SMTP credentials wrong (if using SMTP plugin)
- reCAPTCHA/Akismet flagging as spam (different message)
⚡ Quick fix
- Install an SMTP plugin and use your provider’s SMTP/API
- Set From to an address on your domain
- Check the SMTP plugin’s email log/test
Detailed fix by platform
WordPress
add_action('wp_mail_failed', function ($e) { error_log(print_r($e->get_error_data(), true) . ' ' . $e->get_error_message()); });
How to diagnose
- wp_mail — Error from wp_mail_failed
- From — Domain alignment (SPF/DKIM)
- SMTP — Test email works?
