Meaning
Very large images (e.g. 6000×4000 phone photos) need lots of memory to resize into multiple sizes. WordPress suggests uploading a smaller image; the real fix is more memory or a different image editor.
Common causes
- Insufficient PHP memory for large images
- Imagick misconfiguration or resource limits
- Many registered image sizes multiplying work
- Shared hosting CPU throttling
⚡ Quick fix
- Increase memory_limit/WP_MEMORY_LIMIT
- Resize images before upload (2560px max)
- Switch to GD or tune Imagick; remove unused image sizes
Detailed fix by platform
WordPress
- php
define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M'); add_filter('big_image_size_threshold', fn() => 2560);
How to diagnose
- Size — Image megapixels
- Memory — memory_limit
- Editor — Imagick or GD?
