WordPress: The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2026/10
PHP received the upload but couldn’t move it from the temp directory into uploads — permissions, disk space, or open_basedir/temp dir problems.
Seen on:
WordPress
Meaning
PHP writes uploads to upload_tmp_dir first, then WordPress moves them. If the uploads folder isn’t writable, the disk/quota is full, or open_basedir excludes the temp dir, the move fails.
Common causes
- uploads/ not writable by PHP
- Disk or account quota full
- upload_tmp_dir missing/not writable
- open_basedir restriction
⚡ Quick fix
- Fix ownership/permissions of uploads
- Free disk space
- Set a valid upload_tmp_dir writable by PHP
Detailed fix by platform
Linux
- bash
php -i | grep -E 'upload_tmp_dir|open_basedir' sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads df -h
How to diagnose
- Folder — Writable?
- Temp — upload_tmp_dir
- Disk — Space/quota
