The uploaded theme zip doesn’t have style.css at its top level — usually a full download package or a plugin zip.

Meaning

Theme marketplaces include documentation, child themes and the installable theme zip inside the download. Upload only the installable zip (e.g. theme-name.zip).

Common causes

  • Uploaded the full marketplace package
  • Zip has an extra nested folder
  • Uploaded a plugin as a theme
