Job for x.service failed 🐧 Linux

Job for nginx.service failed because the control process exited with error code

systemd tried to start the service, but its start command failed. The real reason is in the service’s status/journal.

Seen on: Linux

Meaning

This message is generic. systemctl status and journalctl -u show the actual error: a config syntax error, a port already in use, missing permissions or files, or a dependency down.

Common causes

  • Configuration error in the service (nginx.conf, php-fpm pool)
  • Port already in use
  • Missing file, certificate or permission
  • Wrong ExecStart in the unit file

⚡ Quick fix

  1. Read the error: systemctl status <svc> -l and journalctl -xeu <svc>
  2. Validate config (nginx -t, apachectl configtest)
  3. Fix and restart

Detailed fix by platform

Linux

  1. bash
sudo systemctl status nginx -l --no-pager
sudo journalctl -xeu nginx --no-pager | tail -40
    sudo nginx -t

  1. Journal — Last error lines
  2. Config test — nginx -t / php-fpm -t
  3. Port — ss -ltnp
