Failed to start x.service: Unit x.service not found
systemd has no unit with that name — the package isn’t installed, the name differs on this distro, or a new unit file wasn’t loaded.
Seen on:
Linux
Meaning
Service names vary (ssh vs sshd, apache2 vs httpd, mysql vs mariadb). Custom units placed in /etc/systemd/system need systemctl daemon-reload before systemd sees them.
Common causes
- Service package not installed
- Different name on this distro
- New/edited unit file without daemon-reload
- Typo or wrong file extension (.service)
⚡ Quick fix
- List units: systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i name
- sudo systemctl daemon-reload after adding a unit
- Install the package
Detailed fix by platform
Linux
- bash
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -iE 'ssh|httpd|apache' sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now myapp.service
How to diagnose
- Installed — dpkg -l / rpm -q
- Name — list-unit-files output
- File — ls /etc/systemd/system/*.service
