Networking: PING: transmit failed. General failure. / ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
The operating system could not even send the packet, so the problem is local (adapter, route or firewall), not the remote host.
PING: transmit failed. General failure.transmit failed. General failure.ping: sendmsg: Operation not permittedping: connect: Network is unreachableGeneral failure ping Meaning
Usually the network adapter is disabled or disconnected, the machine has no valid route/IP, a VPN adapter is stuck, or a local firewall blocks outbound ICMP. Check ipconfig /all, re-enable the adapter, reset the stack (netsh winsock reset) and look at VPN clients.
Common causes
- Adapter disabled or disconnected
- No IP or default route
- VPN or virtual adapter in a bad state
- Local firewall or security software blocks outbound ICMP
- Corrupted TCP/IP stack
⚡ Quick fix
- Check
ipconfig /allfor a valid IP and gateway - Re-enable the adapter or disconnect the VPN
netsh winsock resetandnetsh int ip reset, then reboot
Detailed fix by platform
Windows
- powershell
ipconfig /all netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset
How to diagnose
- IP address — Valid?
- Adapter — Enabled?
- VPN/firewall — Interfering?

Many errors look alike. If the steps above didn’t solve it, one of these is probably what you’re facing:
Similar errors
- 169.254.x.x self-assigned IP (DHCP failed) Networking: IPv4 address 169.254.x.x (Autoconfiguration / APIPA) — the PC couldn't get an address from DHCP
- Frag needed and DF set (ICMP type 3 code 4) Networking: ping: local error: message too long, mtu=1500 / Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set
- ICMP Destination unreachable (Port unreachable) Networking: ICMP Destination unreachable (Port unreachable) — UDP packet sent to a port where nothing is listening
Most viewed in Networking
- Native VLAN mismatch / wrong VLAN, no connectivity Networking: %CDP-4-NATIVE_VLAN_MISMATCH / device on the wrong VLAN can't reach the gateway
- Port err-disabled (psecure-violation) Networking: %PM-4-ERR_DISABLE: psecure-violation error detected on Gi0/5, putting Gi0/5 in err-disable state
- Rogue DHCP server hands out wrong gateway/DNS Networking: Clients receive the wrong default gateway or DNS server — a rogue DHCP server (often a home router) answers first
