MissingSubscriptionRegistration 🔷 Azure

MissingSubscriptionRegistration: The subscription is not registered to use namespace 'Microsoft.X'

The resource provider (Microsoft.Web, Microsoft.ContainerService, …) isn’t registered for the subscription.

Seen on: Azure

Meaning

New subscriptions only have common providers registered. Deployments by principals without permission to register providers fail on the first use of a new service.

Common causes

  • Resource provider never registered in this subscription
  • Service principal lacks permission to register providers

⚡ Quick fix

  1. Register the provider: az provider register --namespace Microsoft.X
  2. Wait until registrationState is Registered
  3. Have an Owner/Contributor register it once

Detailed fix by platform

Azure CLI

  1. bash
    az provider register --namespace Microsoft.ContainerService
az provider show -n Microsoft.ContainerService --query registrationState

How to diagnose

  1. State — Registered?
  2. Permissions — Can the identity register providers?
