ARM/Bicep: DeploymentFailed / InvalidTemplateDeployment / InvalidTemplate
An Azure Resource Manager (ARM/Bicep/Terraform) deployment failed; the inner error under “details” has the real cause.
Seen on:
Azure
Meaning
DeploymentFailed is a wrapper. The details array contains the actual code — InvalidTemplate (syntax/expressions), InvalidTemplateDeployment (validation such as SKU/quota/policy), or resource-specific errors.
Common causes
- Template expression or reference error
- Parameter value invalid for the resource
- Policy, quota or SKU restriction during validation
- Dependency missing or ordering issue
⚡ Quick fix
- Read the innermost error in details
- Validate before deploying: az deployment group validate / what-if
- Fix the specific resource property
Detailed fix by platform
Azure CLI
- bash
az deployment group what-if -g rg-app -f main.bicep -p @params.json az deployment operation group list -g rg-app -n main --query "[?properties.provisioningState=='Failed'].properties.statusMessage"
How to diagnose
- Inner error — details[].code/message
- Resource — Which resource failed?
- Validation — what-if output
