Linux
Meaning
glibc is backward- but not forward-compatible. Binaries built on Ubuntu 22.04 (glibc 2.35) won’t run on CentOS 7 (2.17) or Ubuntu 20.04 (2.31). Common with downloaded tools, Node native modules and prebuilt wheels.
Common causes
- Binary built on a newer distro
- Prebuilt native module/wheel for a newer glibc
- Old OS (CentOS 7, Ubuntu 18.04)
⚡ Quick fix
- Download a build for older glibc or a static/musl build
- Build from source on the target system
- Upgrade the OS or run in a container with a newer base
Detailed fix by platform
Linux
- bash
ldd --version | head -1 objdump -T ./app | grep -o 'GLIBC_[0-9.]*' | sort -Vu | tail -3
How to diagnose
- System — ldd --version
- Required — Highest GLIBC_ in the binary
