manifest for image:tag not found: manifest unknown
The repository exists, but the tag you asked for doesn’t — it was never pushed, was deleted, or is misspelled.
Seen on:
Docker
Meaning
Often the tag “latest” simply doesn’t exist (many projects only publish version tags), or the version was pruned from the registry. The same message appears in docker pull, docker run, FROM in a Dockerfile and Kubernetes ImagePullBackOff.
Common causes
- Tag doesn’t exist (no latest tag published)
- Tag typo or wrong version format (v1.2 vs 1.2)
- Tag deleted by registry retention policy
- Image pushed under another repository name
⚡ Quick fix
- List available tags on the registry page or with a tool like crane/skopeo
- Pin an existing version tag instead of latest
- Re-push the image if it was deleted
Detailed fix by platform
Docker
docker run --rm quay.io/skopeo/stable list-tags docker://docker.io/library/node | head
How to diagnose
- Tags — Which tags exist?
- Spelling — v-prefix, dots, suffixes (-alpine)
