Apache: AH00558: apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name

A harmless startup warning: Apache has no global ServerName, so it guessed one from the host’s IP.

Seen on: Nginx

Meaning

The server still works. Set a global ServerName to silence it — but if Apache isn’t starting, the real error is on another line of the log/output.

Common causes

  • No global ServerName directive
  • Hostname not resolvable (/etc/hosts)

⚡ Quick fix

  1. Add ServerName localhost (or your domain) in a global config file
  2. Check the rest of the output for the real startup error

Detailed fix by platform

Apache

  1. apache
echo "ServerName localhost" | sudo tee /etc/apache2/conf-available/servername.conf
sudo a2enconf servername && sudo apachectl configtest && sudo systemctl reload apache2

How to diagnose

  1. Config — apachectl configtest
  2. Startup — Other errors in journalctl -u apache2
