Cloudflare Error 1000: DNS points to prohibited IP

A proxied DNS record points at a Cloudflare IP address, creating a loop.

Seen on: Cloudflare

Meaning

Happens when you put a Cloudflare IP (from a previous proxied setup or a copy of the resolved address) into an A record, or when the origin is another Cloudflare-proxied site’s IP.

Common causes

  • A record set to a Cloudflare anycast IP
  • Origin is another Cloudflare-proxied hostname’s IP
  • Reverse proxy on the origin forwarding back to the same domain

⚡ Quick fix

  1. Set the A record to your origin server’s real IP
  2. Use a CNAME to the origin hostname if it’s another service
  3. Check the origin’s proxy config for loops

Detailed fix by platform

Shell

  1. bash
    # your server's real public IP (run on the origin)
    curl -s https://ifconfig.me

How to diagnose

  1. Record — IP in Cloudflare DNS
  2. Ownership — Is it a Cloudflare IP (104.16.0.0/13, 172.64.0.0/13…)?
